Slovenia has been quietly making high-quality wine for ages, and mostly keeping it all for themselves. The rolling hills of Brda in northern Slovenia are located just a stone's throw from the northeast Italian region of Friuli. In fact, many of Brda's vineyards overlap with Friuli and naturally, so do many of their flagship varietals. When Slovenian cult winemaker Aleks Simcic, known for his experimental wines, was asked to make approachable, everyday bottles that highlight Brda's unique character, Giocato (Italian for playing or having fun) was born. The grapes are sustainably grown on small, family owned plots and harvested by hand. As its name suggests, Giocato is a playful take on its Italian counterparts. The result is a Pinot Grigio that is clean and refreshing, displaying aromas of green apple, pear, and grapefruit, but boasts more richness in texture and bursts with minerality on the palate. Giocato shows us what Pinot Grigio can be when handled with respect. The secret is out, feel free to tell everyone. Food Pairings: Salt Cod and Potatoes; Five Spice Shrimp; Fried Green Tomatoes with Goat Cheese
